While there are multiple reasons for this, including poverty, gender, ethnicity, language, religion, location, etc., one of the primary reasons is disability. In fact, the UNESCO report goes on to state that children with disabilities are <em>\u201cdisproportionately excluded from school.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If we, as a society, aim to better the lives of our children and their children after them, we need to start now by working to reduce barriers to equitable education access for all. For us, as technology-based solution providers for the education sector, this is a mission that takes precedence over our ambitions to garner market share or maximize revenue.<\/p>\n<div Education for Students with Disabilities<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Students with disabilities face not just physical barriers to education but also technological and attitudinal barriers. The most common barriers to education include:<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Physical_Access\"><\/span><strong>Physical Access<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Educational institutions in most countries lack the infrastructure to support physical access for students with disabilities. The lack of ramps, accessible washrooms, appropriate tile marking for students with visual impairments, accessible transportations options, and accommodation facilities are the most common obstacles.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Personalization\"><\/span><strong>Personalization<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The one-size-fits-all approach does not take into account the strengths and individual needs of differently abled students. Stringent policies, such as those for suspension, or minimum attendance requirements, that don\u2019t consider the varying abilities and requirements of differently abled students can lead to discrimination. This also holds true for the pace of curriculum progress and support.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Stereotypes_and_Attitudes\"><\/span><strong>Stereotypes and Attitudes<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>While strides are being taken to promote DEI, negative stereotypes regarding students with disabilities still exist. Lack of awareness and\/sensitivity among educators and students can make it difficult for students with disabilities to access equal opportunities in education. In some countries, students with disabilities are provided education in separate institutions, propagating existing attitudes and stereotypes.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Accessible_Learning_Resources\"><\/span><strong>Accessible Learning Resources<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Availability of braille, audiobooks, or text-to-speech materials for students with visual impairments, captioning for students with hearing impairments, access to multiple content formats for students with learning disabilities or ADHD, etc., can go a long way in ensuring education content accessibility.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Principles_of_Creating_Accessible_Education_Content\"><\/span><strong>Principles of Creating Accessible Education Content<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The role of inclusive learning materials in improving access to education is undeniable. Educational publishers and EdTech solution providers are the critical link to creating accessible materials and spaces for students with disabilities. The starting point is compliance with the <a href=\"https:\/\/integranxt.com\/blog\/wcag-2-2-latest-proposed-recommendation-web-accessibility-impact\/\">web accessibility guidelines<\/a> and standards for education content and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Universal_Design_for_Learning\"><\/span><strong>Universal Design for Learning<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/udlguidelines.cast.org\/\">UDL provides concrete guidelines<\/a> to ensure that all types of learners are able to \u201caccess and participate in meaningful, challenging learning opportunities.\u201d The framework is based on scientific research on the way humans learn. Here are the basic guidelines at a glance:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-26978\" src=\"https:\/\/integranxt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Universal-Design-for-Learning-1024x479.jpg\" alt=\"The image illustrates the basic guidelines of Universal Design for Learning (UDL)in three different columns; 1) Offering multiple engagement methods in course interaction and autonomy. 2) Use diverse content formats for accessibility. 3) Provide multiple avenues for students to express understanding and participate.\" width=\"681\" height=\"310\" \/><\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Web_Content_Accessibility_Guidelines\"><\/span><strong>Web Content Accessibility Guidelines<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>A whopping <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abilitynet.org.uk\/news-blogs\/inaccessible-websites-keep-disabled-people-out-work-abilitynet-tells-government-taskforce\">90% of websites<\/a> did not meet the WCAG standards, as of 2018. The situation has not improved despite the shift to online resources in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. A <a href=\"https:\/\/webaim.org\/projects\/million\/\">study of 1,000,000 websites<\/a> revealed more than 51 million different accessibility errors and an average error count of 51.4 per home page, as of 2021. The web accessibility guidelines and standards are crucial for ensuring accessibility in education content with learning becoming increasingly hybrid, remote and virtual.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/WAI\/standards-guidelines\/wcag\/\">core principles of the WCAG guidelines<\/a> are:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-26979\" src=\"https:\/\/integranxt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Web-Content-Accessibility-Guidelines-922x1024.jpg\" alt=\"This image illustrates the four core guidelines of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG): Perceivable, Operable, Understandable, and Robust (popularly known by the acronym POUR). The image lists the relevant guidelines in short: For Perceivability, content should be comprehensible, with text alternatives for non-text elements, alternatives for time-based media, adaptable layouts, and distinguishable content. Operability means ensuring components are navigable, keyboard-friendly, with adequate time for user actions, and free from elements causing seizures. Content should also be Understandable, ensuring readability, predictability, and assistance for user inputs. Lastly, content should be Robust, compatible with current and emerging technologies, ensuring it remains accessible over time.\" width=\"606\" height=\"675\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Strategies_to_Create_Accessible_Educational_Content\"><\/span><strong>Strategies to Create Accessible Educational Content<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>By following the UDL and WCAG 2.1 guidelines, <a href=\"https:\/\/integranxt.com\/digital-learning-accessibility-for-all\/\">inclusive learning materials<\/a> that help in improving access to education can be created.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Ensure_Ease_of_Seeing_and_Reading\"><\/span><strong>Ensure Ease of Seeing and Reading<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Choose colors, fonts, size, contrast, layouts and headings that are easily distinguishable, especially for students with visual impairments or learning disabilities. Clear structures and layouts go a long way in promoting accessibility in education content.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Make_Images_Accessible\"><\/span><strong>Make Images Accessible<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Add image descriptions, alt tags, and alt text to provide text-based alternatives for images. This helps those using screen readers for learning materials. But keep this text concise and avoid embedding important information as text within images. This is not machine-readable.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Accessibility_for_Videos\"><\/span><strong>Accessibility for Videos<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Closed captioning is crucial for students with hearing impairments. This also helps students who might access videos in public spaces, where it is difficult to use sound or hear clearly.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Offer_Multiple_Content_Formats\"><\/span><strong>Offer Multiple Content Formats<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Multiple formats will cater to the learning styles and preferences of all types of students, including those with disabilities. They also prove useful for students with ADHD and learning disabilities, allowing access to materials in audio, video or text format. Also, offer the flexibility to view materials online as well as offline, via downloads.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Accessibility_as_a_Pathway_to_DEI\"><\/span><strong>Accessibility as a Pathway to DEI<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) of the United States lists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.understood.org\/en\/school-learning\/special-services\/special-education-basics\/conditions-covered-under-idea\">13 categories of disabilities<\/a> that could hamper learning. Data released by the National Center for Education Statistics in May 2023 reveals that about <a href=\"https:\/\/nces.ed.gov\/programs\/coe\/indicator_cgg.asp\">14% of students enrolled in public schools<\/a> in America can be classified in at least one of these categories.<\/p>\n<p>Ensuring accessibility in education can further our attempts at ensuring Diversity, Equity and Inclusivity (DEI), especially for students with special needs. Fortunately, the creation and distribution of accessible educational content has been eased with the availability of cloud-based, AI\/ML-powered technology platforms.
